A wall you look at like a work of art. Real lime plaster, polished by hand into walls with the depth and movement of marble. Applied by the owner, with a detailed written estimate, and finished in a home left clean.
Venetian plaster is not paint and it is not a wallpaper effect. It is genuine lime plaster, built up in thin layers and burnished by hand until the surface takes on the depth, movement and soft sheen of polished stone. Done right, a Venetian plaster wall changes with the light through the day and lasts for decades.
Almost no plastering contractor in Greater Boston offers it, and the decorative painters who do rarely handle the plaster base underneath. Ezra Plastering does both. You get the structural plaster and the design-grade finish from one owner-led team, with the scope agreed in writing before any price.
Traditional Venetian plaster, sometimes called polished plaster or marmorino, is made from slaked lime and fine marble dust. It is troweled on in multiple thin coats, then compressed and polished so the marble particles catch the light. The result is a surface with real depth you can feel, not a printed texture. Because it is lime based, it is breathable and ages beautifully instead of peeling.
It shines where a wall is meant to be noticed: entryway and foyer walls, a fireplace surround, a dining room feature wall, a powder room, or a ceiling that deserves more than flat white. In Newton, Brookline and Chestnut Hill homes we most often use it to give one room a quiet, high-end centerpiece rather than covering an entire house.
We start by preparing the substrate so the finish lasts: the wall is skimmed smooth and primed. Then the base coats go on, followed by the finish coats and the burnish that brings out the depth. Every layer is applied by the owner, not handed to a rotating crew, so the movement and color stay consistent across the whole wall.
You can apply real Venetian plaster over drywall when the wall is properly skim-coated and primed first. Skipping that prep is why some finishes crack or flash. We handle the prep as part of the job. Want the detail before you commit? Read our guide on applying Venetian plaster over drywall.

Real Venetian plaster is lime based, which means it is breathable and, once burnished and sealed, remarkably durable. In day-to-day life it needs almost nothing: dust with a soft dry cloth, and wipe the occasional mark with a barely damp cloth and mild soap, never an abrasive or bleach based cleaner.
In Greater Boston, the bigger enemy is moisture and swings in humidity. We seal feature walls in bathrooms and entryways with a penetrating, breathable sealer so the finish resists the steam of a New England winter without trapping water behind it. On exterior-facing or below-grade walls we check the substrate first, because a beautiful finish over a damp wall will always fail.
Because the finish is applied in thin, hand-troweled layers, a small repair years later blends in seamlessly, unlike paint, which shows every patch. That repairability is one of the quiet reasons homeowners choose it for walls they intend to keep for decades.
No. Venetian plaster is real lime and marble, troweled and polished by hand. Textured paint is a coating that mimics the look but has none of the depth or longevity.
Yes, in areas away from direct water spray. For showers and wet walls we usually recommend Tadelakt or microcement, which are naturally waterproof.
Decades. Because it is lime based and breathable, it does not peel like paint. It can be cleaned and, if ever needed, re-polished.
Always. We walk the space, explain the right approach, and give you a detailed written estimate before any work starts.
